Customs Reporting Requirements For Pleasure Boats
Vessels arriving in Canada or the U.S. from foreign waters must report their arrival to Customs officials. The report of arrival must be made at a designated Port of Entry immediately after the vessel has come to rest. The boat operator, person in charge, or his appointed representative may make the report in person or by telephone.
No other individual or passenger may leave the vessel unless it is to make contact with the Customs Inspectors. It is a violation of Customs Law to remove any baggage or merchandise from the vessel until permission has been granted by an official in charge. No person may board the vessel without a release from Customs officers.
When reporting to the Customs offices of either country be prepared to provide the following information: the vessel name and length, official number, name of the operator, place of moorage, and date and time of arrival. In addition, have the names, addresses, birth dates, and nationality of all passengers close at hand.
United States Citizens arriving in Canada should be prepared to show proof of citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate, or voter's registration card. Resident aliens should be prepared to show a "Green Card" (immigration Form 1151 or 1551) to Customs officials. Non-resident aliens are advised to carry a valid passport with a non-immigration visa. Tourists from some countries will require visas. Canadians entering the U.S. do not need a visa, but must have proof of citizenship.
Upon arrival in either country Customs will provide a clearance number. The number is to be entered into the vessel log and available for reference for one year.
